IT Services & CMMC Support for CNC Machine Shops
In a machine shop, spindle time is revenue. SimplifiedPC keeps the technology behind your machines running, from CAD/CAM workstations and NC program files to the shop floor network, ERP and the security that protects your customers' designs.
Why machine shop IT is different
A CNC shop runs two worlds at once: the office, with ERP, quoting and email, and the shop floor, where machine controls, DNC connections and measurement equipment often run older software that can't be patched like a normal PC. When a CAD/CAM workstation stalls or a program doesn't reach the machine, parts stop shipping. When ransomware reaches the shop floor, machines can sit idle for days.
We design IT around both worlds, so engineering data moves cleanly from design to G-code to the spindle, and problems on one side can't stop the other. For shops doing defense work, we also help you work toward CMMC compliance.
Core IT services for CNC shops
CAD/CAM integration & workflows
We set up and support CAD/CAM environments such as Fusion 360 and Mastercam, so design data moves reliably from engineering to machine-ready G-code.
Shop floor connectivity & IIoT
Industrial IoT platforms, including machine monitoring and digital twin solutions such as Siemens' manufacturing software, to track machine utilization, spindle uptime and live diagnostics.
NC program & tool management
Secure version control for NC programs and databases for tool crib management, cutting setup time and preventing costly machining errors from running the wrong revision.
ERP & quoting automation
Your ERP integrated with AI-assisted quoting tools to speed up job estimates and streamline raw material inventory tracking.
Infrastructure & cybersecurity
High-performance workstations
Rugged, high-spec workstations built and maintained to render complex 3D toolpaths and run heavy CAD/CAM suites without lag. See desktop & server support.
Edge & cloud hybrid networking
Low-latency shop floor networks paired with secure cloud backup for design files and proprietary production data.
OT/IT security
Shop floor machinery segmented from office IT and protected against cyber threats, safeguarding intellectual property and preventing shutdowns. See network security.
Shop networks are designed by a Cisco CCNA- and CCNP-certified engineer and monitored 24/7 with Kaseya.
CMMC compliance for defense suppliers
Machine shops that make parts for the Department of Defense supply chain now need Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) to win and keep contracts. Shops that handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), such as technical drawings and specifications, generally need CMMC Level 2, which is built on the 110 security requirements in NIST SP 800-171. We help you get there step by step:
Gap assessment
We review your current environment against the NIST SP 800-171 requirements and show where you stand and what to fix first.
Scope & protect CUI
We identify where CUI lives and flows, and narrow it to a secure, well-defined environment to keep compliance manageable.
Implement controls
Multi-factor authentication, encryption, access control, logging, 24/7 monitoring, backups and network segmentation.
Documentation support
Technical input for your System Security Plan (SSP) and Plan of Action & Milestones (POA&M).
Assessment readiness
Evidence gathered and systems ready for your self-assessment or third-party (C3PAO) assessment.
Stay compliant
Ongoing managed IT and monitoring so the controls keep working after the assessment is done.
CMMC assessments are performed by authorized assessors (C3PAOs) or through self-assessment, depending on your contract. We help you prepare and maintain the technology and documentation behind them.
How we get your shop connected
-
Walk the shop
We map your machines, controllers, workstations, office systems and how programs move between them.
-
Design the network
A plan that separates shop floor and office networks, with cabling and Wi-Fi sized for your floor.
-
Deploy
Workstations, CAD/CAM, NC program storage and backups installed, scheduled around production.
-
Manage & monitor
Ongoing support and 24/7 monitoring so problems are caught before they stop a machine.
CNC machine shop IT FAQ
Our machine controls run old versions of Windows. Can you protect them?
Yes. Machine controls and DNC computers often can't be updated without breaking vendor support. We isolate them on their own network segment, restrict what they can reach, and back up their programs, so they keep running safely.
How do we stop the wrong program revision from reaching a machine?
We set up central NC program storage with version control and permissions, so operators always load the approved revision and every change is tracked.
Can you work with our existing ERP and CAD/CAM software?
Yes. We support the servers, workstations and networks your software runs on, and for managed clients we work directly with your software vendors when problems come up.
Do we need CMMC Level 1 or Level 2?
It depends on the information in your contracts. Shops that only handle Federal Contract Information (FCI) generally need Level 1, an annual self-assessment. Shops that receive Controlled Unclassified Information, such as controlled drawings, generally need Level 2. Your contract's DFARS clauses and your prime contractor will specify the level; we can help you interpret your situation.
How long does it take to get ready for CMMC Level 2?
It depends on your starting point. A gap assessment shows how many of the 110 requirements are already met. Many small shops need several months to implement controls and complete documentation, so it pays to start well before a contract requires certification.
Can maintenance be scheduled around production?
Yes. Updates, upgrades and network work are scheduled after hours or between shifts so machines keep running.
